How New York, Ants, and Other Moms Will Not Keep Me from Keeping On

My Darlings My Dear,

Last week, we were able to take a last-minute trip to New York City. We live only 4.5 hours from the city by bus, but due to the hours of departure, we had to take the car. That meant 6.5 hours with pee breaks and food breaks. 

 But then views like this were worth the travel time:

I made sure that I did what I loved most about NYC: enjoyed books (at the Shakespeare & Co., Books of Wonder, and the B&N on the Upper West Side); enjoyed art (at The Met and The Museum of Natural History); and enjoyed Broadway (at the off-Broadway play, The Play That Goes Wrong).

 Getting back into the swing of life after this trip has been hard. Namely because we came home to an ant infestation (GAH!) and the mayhem that created. We also have school starting in one more week, and the house has some projects I wanted to get done by the end of summer vacation (again, in one more week).

 I took a keyboard to NYC to use with my iPad--I even downloaded the chapter I was working on, knowing I couldn't do too much work. But I couldn't even get to that chapter--and I still haven't.

 Luckily, I keep an eye on my deadlines and know to make up for lost time in the "gaps" life gives us--gaps such as waiting for my daughter at dance tomorrow and then waiting one more time at fencing. Two hours of worktime! As long as I bring my headphones, I can get some work done (otherwise, the other moms want to keep from being bored by talking to me, not because we're friends, but because I'm a boredom buster).

 No thanks. I got stuff to catch up on!

Interviewing My Story, Finding the Plot Thread, and Understanding My Characters

The confession behind this blog: Read here.  This week, I had a major break-through: I DON'T NEED TO WRITE AN OUTLINE BEFORE I WRITE THE BOOK. Yes. That's right. The pre-writing tool we've been told must be done before we write anything? It has now become a post-writing tool. And I thank my years of teaching college English courses. What I Used to Do This was a majorly mind-blowingly development. I had always done (or rather, NOT done and felt guilty about not doing it) proper outlines and character interviews pre-Draft 1. I thought pre-writing was for anal idiots, and I was not an idiot.  I wanted to jump into the story. Feet first, of course. (Because I was not an idiot.) This is not to say I write by the seat of my pants. I always need a plan, a Pinterest Board, a Polyvore collage.  I just don't want a 100-pages of outlines and character notes. Or, as I call it. Overwhelmed Inertia: Procrastination & Writing

Me. Overwhelmed. And that's Inertia  I'm giving the stink-eye to. I have a confession: I have ADD. But I'm lucky. Since I was a child, I was given coping mechanisms in order to be a productive ADD person: schedules, habits, and the go-ahead to be a crazy-ass multi-tasker. Thanks Mom, you teacher and counselor you! The Positives of Being a Writer and Having ADD (with Coping Mechanisms) I can get a lot done, just not all 100% in the course of a day (ultimately, though, I do hit 100%--thank you, Type A personality). Right now, in fact, I just stepped away to 1) snap a picture for my new Tumblr account, 2) email a critique buddy about the way she should set up her new story (alternating POVs a la Holes was maybe the answer, but it ended up being more Shawshank Redemption), 3) make a cup of coffee and 4) pull up a website I saw in Writer's Digest ( Women's Fiction Writers ).
